John Hinckley,Jr was crazy as a bedbug. Just think how far we would be, if instead of ranting and raving about gun control since 1981, we had instead focused on setting up a nation wide, world class mental health system that could identify, intervene and treat all people with mental health issues. Instead we did nothing, our mental health system is a patchwork of fantastic care for some and terrible care for many and its usually focused on how much billable insurance a patient has. We don’t identify folks who are at risk for mental health problems well, we don’t offer very good treatment as a whole, and we stigmatize mental health like no other medical conditions get stigmatized.
