The Coffee Party is a network of people who want to self-organize for social change and do not wait for "leaders."
It's imperative for our democracy that we start believing in ourselves instead of candidates and "leaders." We become passive and disempowered when we expect top-down leadership. It's another failed model: "trickle-down" leadership.
This is the age of lateral, viral activism. Anyone can give another person a cold. Anyone can inspire another to take action.
More than ever, we must believe: We are the ones we've been waiting for.
Check out what Mary Lee Woodward did in Michigan. She started a movement in Michigan to fight back against extreme budget measures that would shift the tax burden from big business to senior citizens. AARP joined her.
And consider what Laurie MacNaughton did to save a family and a home in her community. One person truly can save another.
Take a look at what Wesleyan University students did to ignite a movement among college students to protest the proposed funding cuts for Planned Parenthood.
12 friends sitting in a pub started UK Uncut, a movement against austerity sweeping Britain.
15 young professionals in Egypt guided the revolution using new social media.
These are inspiring examples. We all have what it takes to spark a movement.
Do you have 10-14 people in your network who can help you organize an action?
Here are some tools to help you get started. Check out our suggested actions for April to speak up about the corruption of our government by big money, extreme income inequality and the problem of corporate tax avoidance.
